Aecht Schlenkerla Maerzen Smokebeer
WWED Grade: A (for it’s style)

Appearance: Clear.
Very dark – almost blood red. Very little head that dissipated fast.
Smell: Wow
– I can smell the smoke in this as I pour. Like Cedar. Musky.
Taste: Yup
– that’s a very smoked beer. Extremely woody. If you don’t like “smoked” beers
– don’t drink this!
Drinkability: Very drinkable. Nice carbonation. Easy to drink – slightly overwhelming
flavor.
ABV: 5.4%
Serving Type: Bottle – poured in goblet.
Okay – if you’ve never had a
smoked beer, you ought to try it. At least once. The style is incredibly unique.
And you don’t see it done well very
often. A lot of people really don’t like these beers. To be honest, I’m not the
biggest fan either. But you’ve gotta respect those that do it right. Aecht
Schlenkerla claims to have perfected the technique (they even started and
maintain http://www.smokebeer.com - now
THOSE are real fans). Not sure what I’d drink this with. Fish? It’s kinda like
smoked salmon in flavor. The beer itself isn’t actually “smoked”. Rather, the
smoking takes place in the peets, malts and/or barley. Primary ingredients in
most beers. I personally wouldn’t drink more than one of these in a session. To
